Diabetes & The Erectile Dysfunction / Male Impotence Connection
There are many diseases that affect the nerves leading to the penis which may result in erectile dysfunction / male impotence. One of these is Diabetes Mellitus. Diabetics are at high risk of atherosclerosis and nerve damage, both of which can lead to erectile dysfunction / male sexual impotence.

Erectile dysfunction / impotence is extremely common in diabetic males. The figure is as high as 50% of all diabetics suffering from this male condition. Another 50% become impotent / suffer from erectile dysfunction over time. Most of the men who have this problem are over the age of 40. (One in three men over the age of 60 is affected). However, many males under the age of 40 also suffer from this affliction.
The causes of diabetes are many, and controlling and managing them may help with the challenge of erectile dysfunction / male impotence.
Diabetes is a chronic disorder of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism that has as its characteristics fasting elevations of blood sugar (glucose) levels. This predisposes the diabetic to a high risk of stroke, heart disease, kidney disease and loss of nerve function.
Diabetes can also occur when the pancreas secretes insufficient insulin or if the cells of the body become resistant to insulin. In such a situation, the blood sugar cannot get into the cells. This in turn leads to serious complications, some of which include hypoglycaemia, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), diabetic neuropathy (loss of nerve function), diabetic retinopathy (eye disease that can lead to blindness), diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease) and diabetic foot ulcers.
Diabetic neuropathies are among the most common frequent long-term complications in diabetics. Symptoms include loss of peripheral nerve function, numbness, tingling sensations, muscle weakness and pain.
Diabetic neuropathies can also affect the deeper nerves resuling in impaired heart function, the inability to empty the bladder, alternating bouts of diarrhoea and constipation, and erectile dysfunction / male impotence..
Even if the diabetic male undergoes appropriate therapy for this medical condition, it is rare that the therapy can restore erectile function as the basic diabetic process can never be reversed: only the blood sugar levels and the many complications that result from diabetes can be controlled.
When a diabetic male visits his physician to treat diabetes, the issue of erectile dysfunction and impotence is rarely, or never, addressed.
Diabetes can be treated and controlled, and diabetic-related impotence / erectile dysfunction as an off-shoot problem of being diabetic can, likewise, be treated, managed and controlled.
The first thing is to know that diabetes and male impotence / erectile dysfunction are connected. Once the male diabetic becomes aware of this fact as being the, or one of the, cause(s) of his erectile dysfunction / impotence problem, then he and his physician can work towards resolving the problem.
